Harlan Thrombey (Christopher Plummer) has been found dead, presumably after a suicide, after his eighty-fifth birthday. Detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) is in charge of the case, questioning members of his family and workers in the service of the deceased, including nurse Marta Cabrera (Ana de Armas).

Agatha Christie choral story with a cast full of familiar faces. The film, known in some countries as “Between Razors and Secrets”, has classic keys of the detective genre but with an inversion of the whodunit (who has done it?), Not lacking the mansion in the countryside nor the eccentric family with reasons for suspicion in each of its members, mainly the large inheritance of the deceased.

The narration, with regular use of flashbacks, plays with temporary jumps in different perspectives of space and time to configure the criminal act and entangle the investigation of Daniel Craig, whose apparent role of deduction in criminal mystery is subjected to the presence of the central character of the film interpreted by Ana de Armas. This character is the real protagonist of a process of alibi, concealment, various tricks and blackmail, ending with the musical background of “Sweet Virginia” by the Rolling Stones.

Rian Johnson swiftly exposes his detective compromise with music-loving winks in the names of several of his characters (Joni Mitchell, Linda and Richard Thompson, from Fairport Convention), but his purpose of linking the plot with social aspects does not intensify in emotions because of of a bizarre, artificial progress. At the same time, the uniqueness of the family characters is wasted, relegated to functional figures with four cartoonish lines, which diminishes the future of their struggles for material possession.
