China, 15th century. European mercenaries witness the construction of the Great Wall, which serves both to protect the Chinese border from the Mongol army and to combat the attack of supernatural beings. Zhang Yimou’s action fantasy that recreates in medieval times a combat between warriors and supernatural creatures typical of a B-series “monster movie”.
The result is disappointing. It lacks epic, story, characters… everything is flat, boring, with improvable CGI effects, simple conflicts, imagery with aerial movements, slow motion… and a first echo of spaghetti westerns. The cultural encounter is not taken advantage of, it resorts to cliches in Themes and in the established links, also falling into the politically correct characterization, confused with the evasion of stereotypes, and in the sublimated pose of presumably noble and determined attitudes. Nor does it delve into any question beyond accumulating battles with aesthetic conceptualization to impact in 3D format, and the stage of the great wall does not shine as it should beyond the punctual almost circus choreography.
