A man, whom they call Goreng (Ivan Massagué), appears confined to a platform divided into levels. He is at number 48 accompanied by Trimagasi (Zorion Eguileor). He soon discovers that the food he receives is the leftovers of those confined to the upper levels. His will be for those in the lower ranks.
The Platform, in the style of “Cube” or “Escape Room”, places characters locked in a limited space with an allegorical and dystopian background. It starts from a typical Kafkaesque situation, with a normal citizen in an extraordinary situation (although, unlike Kafka, submitted voluntarily) that endangers his life and that provokes reflection and action on a survival scenario.
The feature film debutant Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia initially creates a mystery situation with a certain visual value, with disturbing elements through dialogues and gestures, highlighting the participation of Zorion Eguilor as Ivan Massagué’s level partner.
Later, the plot is emphasized in aesthetics and ethics, which diminishes the first interest. The effect is multiplied, with the use of gore and hallucinatory sections; and the positive message of solidarity moves between pretense and preaching, falling into the error of confusing equity with equality (egalitarianism is a utopian totalitarianism derived from dystopia), and in an “economic” planning that usually ends in chaos and violence.
The final section is unsatisfactory, subjecting the message to the atmosphere, a trivial symbolism and characters of situation, without background.
